Who would it be? Dead or alive.. Anyone at all!
I always thought that this question is rather interesting, but not as interesting as the answers that may go with it.
With God's blessing, my dad is going to be 60 this eleventh of January. My dad is my man, we really have that sepcial daughter-father bonding, so I was thinking of doing something special for his day, but not sure what since he is not so much into this big crowd gathering cheering making a big deal out of his bday.
On my way from the airport to home yesterday, this question suddenly popped into my head. And I thought, "Voilaa!!! This is it!!". I am going to throw him a little intimate dinner party, with HIS choice of 5 guests.
So I was talking to him, and I casually and hypothetically asked him this question. I first thought he was going to mention some big names of people he has not met in his life, people that he looks up to, which works he admires. But instead he mentioned familiar names. A couple of relatives, and a couple of his buddies. None of them know each other. And then I asked him, how about one famous person? Carefully thought, he said Bondan Winarno, because he thought the combination of all the people he mentioned before plus him would produce a quite interesting dinner conversation.
I wouldn't call my dad is a particular fan of Bondan. My dad is really into literature, so naturally he admires so many Indonesian writers and journalists. He has been following Bondan's works for quite sometime, way before he got famous. I think he can relate with Bondan so much because their same passion on culinary, traveling and culture. A few years back, me and my dad came to this book discussion held at Aksara, which was on Bondan's book, the phenomenal collection of Bondan's writings called "Jalansutera". He really enjoyed the event, and at the end engaged a quite intense conversation with Bondan.
I really wanna try to make this thing happen. My plan is to invite them early, 4-ish PM, throw in a few light friendly cocktails, and then dinner is going to be a special family recipe of Soto Pekalongan. (Seriously, it's nothing you have ever tasted before and if you think you have tasted the best soto, you WILL change your mind after tasting this one. Ask anyone that has tasted this particular soto at my house :)) I haven't thought anything for dessert, though.
I have been trying to contact a friend that may be able to help me to get a hold of this celebrity guest since yesterday, but no luck yet. Even if I can finally get a hold of her, I don't know if he's willing to come to a stranger's house for dinner. So.. I am asking you, who should be the alternative celebrity guest for my dad's birthday dinner?
Let me me give you a few hints on the other guests:
1. Oom Imam Prasojo: is a distant relative that really delightful to have around and is probably the youngest among the other guests. Really smart guy, I think he is a quite well-known lecturer or sociologist or something. He's on TV a lot.
2. Oom Jendol: is a cousin of my mom that is still really holding on to old conservative Javanese values. Quite a funny man, and is pretty adventurous. At 65, he recently had a road trip with a friend all the way to Lombok for 2 whole weeks.
3. Oom Putut is actually my mom's buddy from highschool, whom really clicked with my dad. Really friendly and easy to get along with, he's recovering from devastating and tough times because his daughter and wife passed away at almost the same time a couple of years ago. He's in my parents' ballroom dancing group.
4. Oom Rizal is my mom's bestfriend's husband from college. A straight out Bataknese, loves to live as much as he loves food, and has greaaattt sense of humour. He's hillarious.
5. Oom Andi Rally is our neighbor that just recently became acquainted with my parents. A former key personnel of a local private tv station which has retired and now is a successful entrepeneur through a MLM business, selling a energy saving caplets.
So that's the guests list. I know it's qite a short notice, but you think you can help me to think of an alternative (celebrity) guest for my dad's birthday dinner? Anyone you can think of that has personalities which will match with my dad's and other guests mentioned above? Anyone but politicians.. and Dave Hendrik. Thanks guys.. I'd really appreciate it. :)
